Concrete Doesn’t Have To Be Grey

Yassar AltafHello, I am Yassar Altaf, Concrete and Waterproofing Marketing Manager at Sika.

I have recently just joined the team here at Sika, but I’m not totally new to concrete. Previous to my new role with Sika I was working at Hanson as brand manager for their ready-mix concrete division.

Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. When most people think of concrete their overwhelming focus is on its compressive strength, so it is always a challenge to market concrete so it can be realised for more than just a strong and durable building material. People have always joked with me that if you can market concrete you can market anything. The typical perception of concrete is that it is just a dull grey building material. However, concrete doesn’t have to be grey, and definitely not boring.

Working with our partners Hanson Concrete, we have recently helped them launch a new range of coloured concretes. Hanson’s Colourcrete range uses durable colour fast pigments formed from iron oxides which disperse easily in the concrete mix. The concentrated liquid pigments supplied by Sika produce a high intensity of colour in the concrete.

The Colourcrete range can add a whole new dimension to architectural projects. It can be used wherever conventional concrete is specified and can be colour-matched to blend with the surrounding area or help the project stand out from the crowd.

A slick new showroom was also launched at the Building Centre in London where architects and specifiers can touch and feel the product as well as see the different colours in which it is available. Samples made by the Sika technical team are available to take away as well as brochure, including a colour card. You don’t have to be an architect to visit the showroom, so if you’re in the area, pop in and have a look.

The Colourcrete showroom can be found in the Building Centre, Store St, London.
